An aid organisation had set up a stall outside and was busy handing out pink cupcakes to draw attention to illegal sex workers’ working conditions. All of them went there and took a cupcake *(except Amir)*. Javed happened to take two andsaid that he took Amir’s. As Sara ate her cupcake, she felt grateful; it was excellent. Wait. Something was wrong. As Sara ate her cupcake, she certainly did not feel grateful! *The organisation had to admit, in hindsight, that this PR campaign was not their best.*

They walked on, past a poster which promised everyone a happily ever after if they only paid for a lifetime membership on the dating app. The poster also claimed that the latest scientific discoveries *(that people were horny and felt lonely)* had helped the founders of the dating app turn it into the bestest dating app to date. The poster had a surprisingly diverse range of people. Sara could not help but smile when she saw that an elderly couple were quoted as saying that they wished they had tried the app earlier in life.

Amir’s men stopped at a rusty, inconspicuous black car and knelt to check beneath it. A passer-by asked if they had lost contact lenses. They ignored the passing moron *(atypical person)* and checked the engine. Javed smiled at an old man who asked if they needed help and told him not to worry. The men then took the front seats. A pair of white fluffy dice hung from the rear-view mirror.

The back seat was crowded. Sara sat in the middle and tried to make herself as small as possible. Sara realised that she smelled of sweat and apologised. They ignored her. Sweet wrappers lay on the footwell. She noticed that her left arm was bruised from Caro’s grip earlier and her right hand still hurt from her gentle handshake. Caro showed the driver, Javed, the tracker’s location.

Everyone in the car *(except Amir)* was distracted by a boy who was bird watching. His mother, a librarian of some repute, told him to stop what he was doing immediately. The boy asked his mother if she loved him. His mother said that she did. The boy sensed that she wanted to say more, and asked, ‘But?’ His mother sighed and said, ‘My dear little boy, your mother gets somewhat concerned when you speak with birds.’ The boy gave her a blank stare and said, ‘My dear mother, I know that I should not talk to strangers. The birds introduced themselves before they taught me some choice words, a red robin said…’

Amir turned to Sara. ‘He is probably dead.’ Sara said nothing but refused to believe it. She had always known that Tom was trouble and this was what had initially attracted her to him. *He had also happened to be over six feet and had wads of cash held together with yellow rubber bands.* However, Sara had only expected him to get arrested at some point. She felt Caro squeeze her hand extremely gently so that no bones were broken. Javed drove them away, honking twice to let a woman know that he had noticed her.

*Human Resources (HR) sent a representative to welcome me. She immediately confiscated my calendar which celebrated natural women. Well, my imaginary girlfriend only appeared in it once, so no loss. I will continue watching her content. A colleague popped in just to ask how I got my job. I said that I had been hired to write and narrate a story after I submitted a proposal that they had found curious, odd, funny, inappropriate, and unusual. He laughed as he left.*
