*Since HR has “asked” me to explain how I thought when I wrote chapters 1 to 5, I am hereby acknowledging their request in a respectful manner. Let us begin with that flat in the first chapter. Its layout is based on my own home. However, my flat is neither as messy nor as dirty. In addition, I have never punched a hole in a wardrobe.*

*I would have liked to use a standard disclaimer concerning the characters, but I have been asked to explain. Amir is deliberately mysterious. Javed is a huge man from the Middle East with an impressive beard because I found that image amusing. Rayhan is meant to provoke relatable humour. Caro is so strong that it is inconvenient simply because I find the idea funny. Would Superman be able to eat without bending more utensils than Uri Geller? Sara is never described because her appearance is not important. She serves as the readers’ eyes.*

*I tend to think as if I were writing for television, so in the second chapter I had humour in mind when I allowed the lift to become crowded. It creates an awkward situation for everyone except Amir. The scene was approved by our intimacy coordinator. I also thought it would be amusing if thieves caught in the act just took a break. In the narrative commentary for the chapter, I draw attention to the question ‘Where are you from?’ which some find offensive. I do not find the question offensive. I simply thought that it was irrelevant. I believe people decide whether to take offence. I am sorry for not answering the question in a respectful manner.*

*The first joke in the third chapter, involving the pink cupcakes, is based on a personal experience. I am not entirely sure what the aid organisation was thinking. If people are grateful for the cupcakes, are they then not indirectly grateful for illegal sex work? Sara sitting in the middle in a crowded car is once again just a funny image. I discussed the scene with our intimacy coordinator. The boy talking to birds is not meant to poke fun at atypical people.*

*I included vigilante justice in the fourth chapter because it is a topic raised by the film Citizen Vigilante and events in Europe. The calendar confiscated by HR was created by women to celebrate how beautiful they can be without modifications. I am sorry that it caused offence. I admit that I broke the printer’s paper tray with a crowbar. I am truly sorry. I hope you can find it in your hearts to forgive me. I did not mean to disrespect any animals by calling them ‘unconventionally cute’. I am sorry if any animals took offence.*

*Humour is subjective and I am sorry if I have somehow offended someone.*

*I did not write this while facing the threat of immediate dismissal from work.*
